5-3-2 Formation
Updated
The 5-3-2 formation puts five defenders, three midfielders and two strikers in front of the goalkeeper. The five defenders are three center backs and two wing-backs. It's built to defend and counterattack: hard to break down in the middle and quick on the break, but it can get pinned back and short of width going forward.

5-3-2 formation diagram
Formation numbers count field players from the back, without the goalkeeper. So a 5-3-2 soccer formation has five defenders, three midfielders and two forwards. Our soccer formations guide compares it with every other common shape.
The 5-3-2 uses the same players as a 3-5-2. The difference is where the wing-backs start: in a 5-3-2 they line up with the center backs, so the team defends first and attacks second.
5-3-2 positions and roles
The diagram uses the same labels as our lineup maker and planner, which name each spot by where it stands. LWB and RWB are the wing-backs, LCB and RCB the outside center backs, and LCM and RCM the two midfielders beside the CM.
| Position | Job and key qualities |
|---|---|
| GK | Goalkeeper. Stops shots, organizes the back five and starts counterattacks with quick throws or passes. Key qualities: shot stopping, communication, fast distribution |
| LWB, RWB | Wing-backs. Defend the sidelines, then push up to give the team width when it's safe. Key qualities: stamina, speed, 1v1 defending, crossing |
| LCB, RCB | Left and right center backs. Mark forwards in the channels and step out to win the ball, knowing two teammates cover behind. Key qualities: tackling, timing, passing out |
| CB | Middle center back. Organizes the line, covers behind the others and marks the main striker. Key qualities: reading the game, leadership |
| LCM, RCM | Side central midfielders. Shuffle across to protect the wing-backs, win second balls and run forward to support the strikers. Key qualities: work rate, tackling, passing |
| CM | Center midfielder. Screens the back five, keeps the shape and plays the first pass on the counterattack. Key qualities: positioning, quick decisions, passing |
| LF, RF | Strikers. Hold the ball up, run into the channels on counterattacks and press the other team's center backs. Key qualities: speed, strength, finishing, work rate |
How the 5-3-2 attacks
- Counterattack fast. Win the ball deep, then play quickly into the two strikers before the other team can recover.
- Strikers work as a pair. One comes short to hold the ball up, the other runs behind. That gives the midfield time to join in.
- Wing-backs choose their moment. When the ball is secure, the wing-backs push up and the shape becomes a 3-5-2. When it isn't, they stay home.
- Long switches. The middle center back or center midfielder can switch the ball to a wing-back running into space on the far side.
How the 5-3-2 defends
- Five across the back. The back line covers the full width of the field, so there are few gaps to run into.
- A compact midfield three. The three midfielders stay close together in front of the defense and slide toward the ball.
- Step out with confidence. With three center backs, one can follow a forward who drops short while the other two cover.
- Strikers set the trap. The two forwards block passes through the middle and push play toward the sideline, where the wing-back and a midfielder can close in.
5-3-2 strengths and weaknesses
Strengths
- Very solid defensively, with numbers in front of goal and a spare center back.
- Two strikers are always ready for counterattacks.
- Clear, simple jobs for defenders who are still learning.
- It turns into a 3-5-2 when the wing-backs push up, without changing players.
Weaknesses
- It can sit too deep, invite pressure and give away lots of corners and shots.
- Few players near the other team's goal, so the strikers can be left isolated.
- A five-player midfield (such as a 4-5-1 or 3-5-2) can outnumber the midfield three.
- The wing-backs still have a lot of running to do if the team wants any width.
5-3-2 variations
Two related shapes are a small step away from the 5-3-2.
- 3-5-2: push the wing-backs into midfield. Same players, more attacking. Many teams defend in a 5-3-2 and attack in a 3-5-2.
- 4-4-2: switch to a back four and two wide midfielders, and keep the strike pair. It's a common move if your center backs are getting stretched or you need more width. See the 4-4-2 formation guide.
Who plays the 5-3-2: a short history
The 5-3-2 is built around a spare defender, an idea with deep roots in Italian soccer. UEFA says Helenio Herrera did not invent catenaccio but was perhaps its most successful user. At Inter he moved a midfielder back to act as a sweeper, with Armando Picchi as the libero behind rigid man-marking, and left back Giacinto Facchetti became one of the first attacking fullbacks. Inter won the European Cup in 1964 and 1965 (UEFA's profile of Herrera's Inter).
Many modern teams reach a 5-3-2 without the ball: their wing-backs drop level with the three center backs. UEFA notes that 15 teams played with three at the back at some stage of EURO 2020, the Netherlands and France among them (UEFA on three at the back at EURO 2020). Antonio Conte's 3-5-2 teams at Juventus, Inter, Chelsea and Tottenham are well-known examples of the same back three.
5-3-2 vs other formations
These are general patterns to start from, not rules.
| Against | What usually happens | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| 4-4-2 | Your three center backs have a spare player against two strikers. Your wing-backs face their wide midfielders 1v1. | Let a center back step into midfield with the ball. Keep the strikers on their center backs. |
| 4-3-3 | Your five defenders handle their front three with two spare, but their full-backs get free on the outside. | Let the wing-backs step up to their full-backs while the back three cover. |
| 4-2-3-1 | Their attacking midfielder plays in front of your back line and between your midfielders. | Give the center midfielder that player, or let a center back step up. |
| 3-5-2 or 4-5-1 | Five midfielders against your three, so you may lose the ball in the middle. | Push a wing-back into midfield when you have the ball, or play earlier passes to the strikers. |
| 3-4-3 | Their front three and wing-backs push five players high against your back five. | Stay compact, then counter into the space they leave behind their wing-backs. |
Using the 5-3-2 in youth soccer
With ten field players to place, the 5-3-2 belongs to 11v11, which US Soccer's age-group guidance lists as the top format from U13. U11–U12 teams play 9v9, so a back five usually waits until then.
- Use it with a purpose. It can help a team that's conceding a lot settle into games. Just don't let it become a reason to never attack: young players learn by having the ball.
- Rotate the wing-backs. They run the most. Short shifts keep them able to get forward and back.
- Rotate positions across the season. Time at center back, wing-back, midfield and forward builds well-rounded players. The planner's Rotate positions (development) setting spreads positions across each game, and our youth soccer positions guide explains how.
Sub plan for a 5-3-2
Here's a U13–U14 plan with 15 players. Two 35-minute halves is the 13U–14U length in US Youth Soccer's national championship rules, and AYSO uses it as the U13–U14 maximum. Subbing every 7 minutes gives ten windows with four players out each time, and each goalkeeper plays one half in goal. Ten players get 49 minutes and five get 56, a gap of one window.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 5-3-2 formation?
The 5-3-2 is an 11v11 formation with five defenders, three midfielders and two strikers in front of the goalkeeper. The five defenders are three center backs and two wing-backs. It is a defensive shape that aims to stay compact and hit the other team on the counterattack.
What are the positions in a 5 3 2 formation?
A goalkeeper; three center backs (left, middle and right); a left and right wing-back; three central midfielders, with the middle one screening the defense; and two strikers who play as a pair. The wing-backs defend the sidelines and push up to give width when it is safe.
Is the 5-3-2 football formation defensive?
Yes, it starts from defense. Five players across the back cover the width of the field, and three midfielders protect the middle. It can still attack well on the counter, because two strikers stay up, and when the wing-backs push forward the shape turns into a 3-5-2.
What is the difference between a 5-3-2 and a 3-5-2?
They use the same players. In a 5-3-2 the wing-backs line up with the three center backs, so the team has five defenders. In a 3-5-2 the wing-backs play in midfield. Many teams switch between the two in the same game, defending as a 5-3-2 and attacking as a 3-5-2.
How do you beat a 5-3-2 soccer formation?
Outnumber its midfield three with a five-player midfield, move the ball quickly from side to side to pull the back five out of shape, and get your full-backs high to pin the wing-backs. Be patient, and watch for counterattacks from its two strikers when you commit players forward.
Is the 5-3-2 good for youth soccer?
It can help an 11v11 team at U13 and older that is conceding a lot, because the jobs are clear and there are plenty of defenders. Use it with a purpose rather than every week, rotate the wing-backs often, and give players time in other positions so they keep learning to attack.
How do I plan fair subs for a 5-3-2?
Use the free substitution planner and choose the 5-3-2. With 15 players, two 35-minute halves and a sub every 7 minutes, four players sit each window, 10 players get 49 minutes, five get 56, and each goalkeeper plays one half in goal. Change the numbers to match your team.
