4-5-1 Formation
Updated
The 4-5-1 soccer formation uses four defenders, five midfielders and one striker. In the flat 4-5-1 the five midfielders line up across the field; in the 4-1-4-1 one of them sits deeper as a holding midfielder. Both are compact and hard to play through, but the lone striker can get isolated.

4-5-1 formation diagram
Formation numbers count field players from the back and leave out the goalkeeper, so a 4 5 1 has four defenders, five midfielders and one forward. Our soccer formations guide compares it with every other common shape.
The idea is simple: crowd the middle. Five midfielders in front of a back four leave very little space between the lines, and the two wide midfielders can push up to join the striker when your team has the ball.
4-5-1 positions and roles
The diagram uses the same labels as our lineup maker and planner, which name each spot by where it stands. In the flat 4-5-1, LM and RM are the wide midfielders, and LCM and RCM are the central midfielders on either side of the CM.
| Position | Job and key qualities |
|---|---|
| GK | Goalkeeper. Stops shots, organizes the back four and starts attacks with passes to the full-backs or center backs. Key qualities: shot stopping, communication |
| LB, RB | Full-backs. Defend the sidelines and overlap the wide midfielders when it's safe. Key qualities: speed, 1v1 defending, stamina |
| CB (2) | Center backs. Mark the striker, win the ball in front of goal and pass out to the midfield. Key qualities: tackling, positioning, composure |
| LM, RM | Wide midfielders. Track the other team's full-backs, then push up to join the striker in attack. Key qualities: work rate, speed, crossing |
| LCM, RCM | Central midfielders. Run from box to box: press, win the ball and arrive in the penalty area to support the striker. Key qualities: fitness, passing, timing of runs |
| CM | Center midfielder. Stays central, screens the back four and keeps the ball moving. Key qualities: positioning, discipline, simple passing |
| ST | Striker. Holds the ball up so midfielders can join, leads the press and finishes chances. Key qualities: strength, first touch, finishing, work rate |
4-1-4-1 formation
The 4-1-4-1 formation uses the same eleven players, but one central midfielder drops into a holding role (DM on the diagram) between the back four and a midfield line of four.
| Flat 4-5-1 | 4-1-4-1 | |
|---|---|---|
| Midfield shape | Five in one line | One holder behind a line of four |
| Who protects the back four | The whole midfield line, led by the CM | A dedicated holding midfielder |
| Pressing | The line moves up and back together | The four in front can press higher while the holder stays |
| Main risk | Gaps open if the line gets stretched | The holder gets overloaded if the four are bypassed |
| Good choice when | You want a simple, compact shape | The other team has an attacking midfielder you need to mark |
How the 4-5-1 attacks
- Striker holds it up. A pass into the striker gives the midfielders time to run forward and support.
- Wide midfielders push up. With the ball, the outer midfielders move level with the striker, and the shape looks like a 4-3-3.
- Late runs from midfield. The central midfielders arrive in the box after the striker has pulled defenders away.
- Full-backs overlap. When a wide midfielder cuts inside, the full-back runs past on the outside to cross.
- Counterattacks. Winning the ball in midfield means attackers are already close to the other team's goal.
How the 4-5-1 defends
- Two compact lines. The back four and midfield five stay close together, so there's little room to pass between them.
- Shift as a unit. Both lines slide toward the ball, and the far-side wide midfielder tucks in.
- Wide midfielders track back. They follow the other team's full-backs so your full-backs aren't outnumbered.
- Striker screens. The lone forward blocks passes into the other team's holding midfielder and pushes play to one side.
4-5-1 strengths and weaknesses
Strengths
- Hard to play through: five midfielders protect the middle of the field.
- Wins the midfield numbers battle against two-striker shapes such as the 4-4-2.
- Easy to turn into a 4-3-3 when attacking.
- Works well when your team needs to stay in a game against stronger opponents.
Weaknesses
- The lone striker can get isolated, with nobody close enough to pass to.
- Few players arrive in the box unless the midfielders make the runs.
- It can drop too deep and give the other team lots of possession.
- Central midfielders have a lot of running to do at both ends.
4-5-1 variations
Besides the 4-1-4-1 above, two shapes are a small step away. Both keep the back four and a single striker.
- 4-3-3: push the wide midfielders up into a front three. A 4-5-1 often looks like this when it has the ball.
- 4-2-3-1: use two holding midfielders and three attacking midfielders behind the striker. More support for the striker, with two players protecting the back four. See the 4-2-3-1 formation guide.
Who plays the 4-5-1: a short history
The 4-5-1 is often the defending shape of a one-striker team rather than its starting shape. FIFA's technical report on the 2010 World Cup describes 4-3-3 teams such as Mexico, Japan and Cameroon dropping their wide forwards back to form a nine-player defensive block when they lost the ball (FIFA 2010 technical report). Four defenders and five midfielders behind one striker is that same block.
The Premier League's tactics series gives several recent examples of the 4-5-1 as a mid-block. Gennaro Gattuso's Napoli won the 2020 Coppa Italia with a disciplined 4-5-1. Jürgen Klopp's Liverpool often used one when it needed to be compact, including in its 2021/22 cup double season. Eddie Howe's Newcastle United built an effective 4-5-1 mid-block, and after EURO 2020, Gareth Southgate's England defended in a 4-1-4-1 or a flatter 4-5-1 (Premier League: the 4-5-1 explained).
4-5-1 vs other formations
These are general patterns to start from. Watch how the other team actually plays and adjust.
| Against | What usually happens | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| 4-4-2 | Five midfielders against four gives you the extra player in the middle, but their two strikers face your two center backs. | The 4-1-4-1's holder can drop in to help the center backs. |
| 4-3-3 | Your wide midfielders face their full-backs and your full-backs face their wingers. | Keep the wide midfielders disciplined so your full-backs aren't left 2v1. |
| 4-2-3-1 | Their attacking midfielder looks for space in front of your back four. | Use the 4-1-4-1 and give the holding midfielder that player. |
| 3-5-2 | Five midfielders each, and your lone striker faces three center backs. | Push a central midfielder up to support the striker when you have the ball. |
| 5-3-2 | Your five midfielders outnumber their three. | Keep the ball, switch play, and get the full-backs forward to stretch their back five. |
Using the 4-5-1 in youth soccer
The 4-5-1 is an 11v11 formation for U13 and older teams; under US Soccer's standards, U11–U12 still play 9v9. If your team played a 4-3-1 in 9v9 formations, the 4-5-1 simply adds two wide midfielders.
- Support the lone striker. Teach the midfielders to run beyond the striker, or the shape becomes too defensive.
- Rotate the striker role. Playing alone up front is tough. Sharing it gives more players a chance to learn hold-up play and finishing.
- Rotate positions across the season. Time at full-back, central midfield, wide midfield and striker builds players who understand the whole team. The planner's Rotate positions (development) setting spreads positions across each game, and our youth soccer positions guide explains how.
Sub plan for a 4-5-1
This plan is for a U15–U16 team with a big roster of 17. Games are two 40-minute halves under US Youth Soccer's national championship rules for 15U–16U, which matches AYSO's U15–U16 maximum. A sub every 10 minutes gives eight windows with six players resting in each, and each goalkeeper plays one half in goal. Fourteen players get 50 minutes and three get 60, so everyone plays more than half the game.

With six on the bench, share the lone striker's spot among several players so nobody spends a whole game chasing on their own. If your competition caps sub moments (US Youth Soccer's national championship rules allow 15U–19U teams four per match plus halftime), switch the planner to Custom times and enter the windows you're allowed.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 4-5-1 formation in soccer?
The 4-5-1 is an 11v11 formation with four defenders, five midfielders and one striker in front of the goalkeeper. The five midfielders crowd the middle of the field, which makes the team hard to play through, and the two wide midfielders push up to support the striker when the team has the ball.
What is the difference between a 4-5-1 and a 4-1-4-1?
They use the same players. In a flat 4-5-1, all five midfielders line up across the field. In a 4-1-4-1, one central midfielder sits deeper as a holding midfielder, protecting the back four, while the other four form a line in front of them and can press higher.
What are the positions in a 4 5 1 formation?
A goalkeeper; two full-backs and two center backs; a left and right wide midfielder; three central midfielders, with the middle one usually holding; and a lone striker. In the 4-1-4-1 version, the holding midfielder sits on their own between the back four and the midfield line.
Is the 4-5-1 football formation defensive?
It starts compact, so it is often used to defend and stay in games against stronger opponents. It does not have to be passive: when the wide midfielders push up with the striker, it attacks like a 4-3-3, and the central midfielders can make late runs into the box.
How does a 4-5-1 turn into a 4-3-3?
When the team has the ball, the two wide midfielders move up level with the striker to make a front three, and the three central midfielders stay behind them. When the ball is lost, the wide players drop back into midfield and the shape is a 4-5-1 again.
How do you beat a 4-5-1 formation?
Be patient and move the ball quickly from side to side to stretch its two compact lines. Get your full-backs high to pin its wide midfielders, and win the ball early so its lone striker has no support. These are general patterns, so adjust to how the other team plays.
Is the 4-5-1 good for youth soccer?
It can work for 11v11 teams at U13 and older, especially if you are conceding a lot. Teach the midfielders to run beyond the striker so the team still attacks, rotate the lone striker role, and give players time in several positions across the season.
