Equal playing time per player = players on the field × game minutes ÷ players on the roster. In a 7v7 game with two 25-minute halves and 10 players, each player gets 7 × 50 ÷ 10 = 35 minutes (70%).

How the playing time calculator works

Every game has a fixed amount of playing time to share: the number of spots on the field times the length of the game. A 7v7 game of 50 minutes has 350 "player minutes". Divide that by your roster and you have each player's fair share. The calculator also shows how many players sit at any moment, and whether everyone reaches half the game.

The share is exact, but real games are played in sub windows. If the windows don't divide evenly among your players, some players get one window more than others. The Best sub intervals table shows which intervals split the game perfectly and which leave a small difference.

Minutes per player by roster size

Typical game lengths from the US Soccer small-sided standards (4v4, 7v7 and 9v9) and US Youth Soccer event rules (11v11 at U13–U14). Roster limits for each format are in how many players are on a soccer team, and 4v4 quarters are explained in how many quarters are in soccer.

Pick a sub interval that splits the game evenly

Perfectly equal minutes happen when the number of sub windows times the spots on the field divides exactly by your roster size. For example, 11 players in a 7v7 game can't split ten 5-minute windows evenly, so a few players get one extra window:

7v7 with 11 players, 2 × 25 min
Sub intervalSub windowsMinutes eachFairness
Every 2:302030:00–32:308 players get one extra window
Every 5:001030:00–35:004 players get one extra window
Every 12:30425:00–37:306 players get one extra window
Every 25:00225:00–50:003 players get one extra window

When no interval is perfect, choose the one that keeps the difference to a single short window, and rotate who gets the extra time from game to game. The substitution planner does this automatically and remembers it across the season.

The 50% playing time guideline

US Soccer's small-sided standards recommend that every player plays at least 50% of each game in 7v7 and 9v9. AYSO's "Everyone Plays" rule requires every player to play at least half of each game. The calculator flags any roster where equal time would fall below half. That happens when you have more than twice as many players as spots, for example 15 players in a 7v7 game.

Too many players for 50%? Shorter sub windows won't fix the math. Split into two squads for part of the season, or ask your league about playing up a format.

Goalkeepers, late arrivals and short benches

  • Goalkeepers: the fair share includes time in goal. A keeper who plays a whole half in goal needs less field time in the other half. The planner handles this for you, or can give keepers equal field time on top.
  • Late arrivals: a player who misses part of the game should get a fair share of the time they're there. Set "Arrives late" in the planner and it adjusts everyone else.
  • No subs: if you have exactly as many players as spots, everyone plays the whole game. With fewer, you play short-handed.
