4-4-2 Formation

Updated

The 4-4-2 lines up four defenders, four midfielders and two strikers in two compact banks of four. It's good at covering the whole width of the field, it's easy to teach because every player has a partner, and it puts two forwards up front. The diamond 4-4-2 (4-1-2-1-2) narrows the midfield for more central control.

4-4-2 formation positions and roles

Positions in the flat 4-4-2 formation
PositionWhat they doKey qualities
GKGoalkeeper. Stops shots, organizes the two banks of four and starts attacks short or long.Organizing, handling, distribution
LB, RBFullbacks. Defend the flanks with the wide midfielder in front of them, and overlap when the team attacks.1v1 defending, stamina, crossing
CB (2)Center backs. Mark the two strikers, cover each other and keep the back four in a line.Positioning, leadership, strength
LM, RMWide midfielders. Run the length of the sideline: cross and shoot in attack, track the other team's fullback in defense.Engine, crossing, work rate
LCM, RCMCentral midfielders. Win the ball in the middle and keep it moving. Usually one sits while the other gets forward.Tackling, passing, discipline, stamina
LF, RFStrikers. Press the center backs, link up with each other and finish chances. Often one runs behind while the other comes short.Finishing, movement, link-up with a partner

How the 4-4-2 attacks

  • Attack down the wings. The wide midfielder and fullback on each side work together. One goes down the line while the other supports inside.
  • Cross for two strikers. With two forwards in the box, one attacks the near post and the other the far post. The far-side wide midfielder arrives late.
  • Use a strike partnership. One striker drops toward the ball to link play, and the other runs in behind. Defenders struggle to track both.
  • Go direct when it's on. Two strikers give a longer pass two targets, and the midfield four pushes up to win the second ball.

How the 4-4-2 defends

  • Two banks of four. Defenders and midfielders form two flat lines with a small gap between them, so there's little room to play through.
  • Slide together. The whole block shifts toward the ball. The far-side wide midfielder tucks in to help the center.
  • Strikers screen. The two forwards block passes into the other team's central midfielders and press a center back when the ball goes wide.
  • Double up wide. Fullback and wide midfielder can trap the ball carrier against the sideline.

4-4-2 strengths and weaknesses

Strengths

  • Simple to teach. Every player has a partner and a clear job.
  • Covers the full width of the field in attack and defense.
  • Two strikers keep both of the other team's center backs busy.
  • The two banks of four are hard to break down when they stay close together.

Weaknesses

  • Two central midfielders can be outnumbered by a three-player midfield, like a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1.
  • An attacking midfielder can find space between your midfield and defense.
  • Wide midfielders do a huge amount of running.
  • It can get predictable if every attack is a cross from the wing.

Diamond 4-4-2 (4-1-2-1-2 formation)

11v11 4-1-2-1-2 (diamond) formation: a goalkeeper, 4 defenders, 4 midfielders and 2 forwards (GK / LB CB CB RB / DM LCM RCM AM / LF RF)
11v11 4-1-2-1-2 (diamond)

The diamond 4-4-2 keeps the back four and two strikers but arranges the midfield as a diamond: a holding midfielder at the base, two midfielders either side of center, and an attacking midfielder at the tip. That's why it's also written 4-1-2-1-2.

Midfield positions in the diamond 4-4-2
PositionWhat they doKey qualities
DMHolding midfielder. Sits in front of the center backs, breaks up attacks and starts play.Discipline, positioning, simple passing
LCM, RCMShuttling midfielders. Play inside, not on the sideline. Cover the space in front of the fullbacks and get forward to support.Stamina, passing, two-way work
AMNo. 10. Links midfield to the two strikers and makes the final pass.Vision, first touch, creativity
LF, RFStrikers. Stretch the back line and make runs into the channels to give some width.Movement, finishing, pace

The back four play the same roles as in a flat 4-4-2, except the fullbacks must push higher, because they are the team's only natural width.

Other 4-4-2 variations

4-2-2-2: the box midfield

11v11 4-2-2-2 formation: a goalkeeper, 4 defenders, 4 midfielders and 2 forwards (GK / LB CB CB RB / DM DM LM RM / LF RF)
11v11 4-2-2-2

The two central midfielders sit as a holding pair, and the wide midfielders play higher and drift inside behind the strikers. The midfield becomes a box of four. It gives you four attackers but leaves the fullbacks to cover the flanks.

4-5-1: one striker drops

11v11 4-5-1 formation: a goalkeeper, 4 defenders, 5 midfielders and 1 forward (GK / LB CB CB RB / LM LCM CM RCM RM / ST)
11v11 4-5-1

One striker drops into midfield to make a flat five. It helps a 4-4-2 team protect a lead or stop being outnumbered in the middle. See the full 4-5-1 formation guide.

Who plays the 4-4-2: a short history

The 4-4-2 grew out of the 4-2-4 that Brazil used to win the 1958 World Cup. The Premier League's tactics series credits Viktor Maslov of Dynamo Kyiv with dropping the two wingers back alongside the central midfielders, and with organized team pressing. His Dynamo side won three league titles in a row in the late 1960s (Premier League: the 4-4-2 explained).

The best-known 4-4-2 club team is Arrigo Sacchi's AC Milan. UEFA describes a zonal 4-4-2 with a high defensive line, an efficient offside trap and never more than 25 to 30 meters between the defense and midfield lines. Milan won back-to-back European Cups in 1989 and 1990, starting with a 4–0 final win over Steaua Bucharest (UEFA's profile of Sacchi's Milan).

Other well-known 4-4-2 coaches include Sir Alex Ferguson, who favored it during his long, trophy-filled reign at Manchester United, and Diego Simeone, who has long relied on it at Atlético Madrid.

4-4-2 vs other formations

These matchups are general guidance based on where each formation puts its players. Your players and the other team's style still decide most games.

How the 4-4-2 matches up against other formations
AgainstYour edgeWatch for
4-3-3Two strikers against two center backs, and your wide midfielders can pin back their fullbacks.Three central midfielders against your two. One striker drops onto their anchor, or switch to the diamond.
4-2-3-1Your two strikers against their two center backs.Their No. 10 between your lines. Keep your banks of four close, and let a central midfielder track them.
3-5-2Your wide midfielders and fullbacks can make 2v1s against their wing-backs.Two strikers against three center backs, and five midfielders against your four.
5-3-2Width: your wide midfielders and fullbacks can stretch their back five.Their back five deals well with crosses. Mix in passes into feet and runs behind.
4-4-2A mirror match with 1v1 battles all over the field.Small edges decide it: second balls, set pieces and which pair of central midfielders wins the middle.

The diamond changes the picture. Against a flat 4-4-2, its four central midfielders face two, but the flat team has more width.

Using the 4-4-2 in youth soccer

Under US Soccer's standards, 11v11 starts at U13, after 9v9 at U11 and U12. The 4-4-2 is one of the easiest shapes for a first 11v11 season. If your team played a 3-3-2 in 9v9, add a defender and a midfielder and you have a 4-4-2.

  • Teach in pairs. Fullback and wide midfielder, the two center backs, the two central midfielders and the two strikers. Partners talk: one goes to the ball, the other covers.
  • Keep the banks close. Watch for a big gap opening between defense and midfield. Ask both lines to move up and back together.
  • Rotate positions. Swap related roles, like wide midfielder and fullback on the same side, central midfielder and striker, or center back and central midfielder. Our youth soccer positions guide covers rotating fairly.
  • Share the wide roles. Wide midfielders run the most, so rotate them often.

A fair 4-4-2 sub plan

This example is a smaller U13–U14 squad. Two 35-minute halves is the 13U–14U game length in US Youth Soccer's national championship rules, and AYSO uses the same maximum for U13–U14. With 14 players, only three sit at a time, so a sub every 5 minutes splits the game perfectly: 14 windows, each keeper in goal for one half, and every player on exactly 55 minutes.

That's a lot of short changes. Subbing every 7 minutes means fewer stoppages, with 12 players on 56 minutes and 2 on 49. Some competitions cap the number of sub moments: US Youth Soccer's national championship rules give 13U–14U teams unlimited substitutions over three moments per half plus halftime. Check your league's substitution rules, and if there's a cap, enter your windows with the planner's Custom times option.
