Soccer Goal Size
Updated
A regulation soccer goal is 8 yards (24 feet) wide and 8 feet tall, or 7.32 × 2.44 meters, measured inside the posts and up to the bottom of the crossbar. Youth goals (height × width) are smaller: up to 4 × 6 ft for 4v4 (U6–U8); up to 6.5 × 18.5 ft for 7v7 (U9–U10), with 6.5 × 12 ft recommended; and up to 7 × 21 ft for 9v9 (U11–U12), with 6.5 × 18.5 ft recommended.

Regulation soccer goal size
The Laws of the Game (IFAB Law 1) set one standard soccer goal size for every 11v11 match, from the World Cup to a U13 league game. There is no separate size for women's soccer.
| Measurement | Imperial | Metric |
|---|---|---|
| Width (inside of post to inside of post) | 8 yd (24 ft) | 7.32 m |
| Height (ground to bottom of crossbar) | 8 ft | 2.44 m |
| Post and crossbar thickness | about 4.7 in or less | 12 cm or less |
How wide is a soccer goal? 24 feet between the inside edges of the posts. How tall is a soccer goal? 8 feet from the ground to the lower edge of the crossbar. Because both numbers are measured on the inside, the frame itself is a little bigger than 8 yards by 8 feet.
Youth players move up to this full-size goal when they start playing 11v11 at U13; AYSO's rules list the same 8 × 24 ft goal.
Soccer goal size by age group
Younger players use smaller goals on smaller fields. These sizes come from US Soccer's small-sided standards (the Player Development Initiatives), and AYSO lists the same numbers:
| Age group | US Soccer recommended | Maximum | Metric (recommended size if there is one) |
|---|---|---|---|
| U6–U8 (4v4) | — | 4 × 6 ft | 1.22 × 1.83 m |
| U9–U10 (7v7) | 6.5 × 12 ft | 6.5 × 18.5 ft | 1.98 × 3.66 m |
| U11–U12 (9v9) | 6.5 × 18.5 ft | 7 × 21 ft | 1.98 × 5.64 m |
| U13 and older (11v11) | — (set by IFAB Law 1) | 8 × 24 ft (regulation) | 2.44 × 7.32 m |
| Futsal (Futsal Laws, Law 1) | — | about 6.6 × 9.8 ft | 2 × 3 m |
Two things to know about this table:
- US Soccer lists maximum sizes. Its FAQ says the goal sizes for each age group are maximums, so a smaller goal is fine. For 4v4, 4 × 6 ft is the largest goal to use, and small pop-up goals are fine.
- The recommended size is smaller than the maximum for 7v7 and 9v9: 6.5 × 12 ft is recommended for U9–U10 (up to 6.5 × 18.5 ft), and 6.5 × 18.5 ft for U11–U12 (up to 7 × 21 ft).
Store listings may use feet and inches: 6.5 × 18.5 ft is 6'6" × 18'6", and 6.5 × 12 ft is 6'6" × 12'. Not sure which age group your child plays in? The youth soccer age groups guide works it out from the birth date and shows the matching format, ball and field.
Leagues can set their own goal sizes. If your league publishes one, use that.
Soccer goal sizes compared, to scale
In area, the difference is large. A full-size goal has 192 square feet of target, about 2.5 times the recommended 7v7 goal (78 sq ft) and 8 times a 4 × 6 ft goal (24 sq ft).
7v7 and 9v9 goals: which size to buy
The 6.5 × 18.5 ft goal is the most flexible size for a club. It is the maximum for 7v7 and the recommended size for 9v9, so one set of goals can serve U9 through U12. A club that wants the recommended size at every age needs 6.5 × 12 ft goals for U9–U10 as well.
Once the goals are up, see our 7v7 soccer formations and 9v9 formations for how to line up a team on these fields.

Goal area and penalty area size
The boxes in front of the goal also scale with the format. These are US Soccer's recommended markings for 7v7 and 9v9, and the IFAB Law 1 markings for 11v11 (width × depth from the goal line):
| Format | Goal area | Penalty area | Penalty mark | Center circle radius | Build-out line |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7v7 | 8 × 4 yd | 24 × 12 yd | 10 yd | 8 yd | Yes |
| 9v9 | 16 × 5 yd | 36 × 14 yd | 10 yd | 8 yd | No |
| 11v11 | 20 × 6 yd | 44 × 18 yd | 12 yd | 10 yd | No |

Futsal and backyard goals
Futsal goals are much smaller than an 11v11 goal: 3 m wide and 2 m tall (about 9 ft 10 in × 6 ft 7 in), measured inside the posts and up to the bottom of the crossbar, under Law 1 of the Futsal Laws of the Game.
For a backyard, no rule applies, so pick by age. The 4 × 6 ft size used up to U8 fits most yards and young children, and a 6.5 × 12 ft goal matches what 9- and 10-year-olds play on. Anchor a backyard goal the same way as a club goal.
Portable vs fixed soccer goals
Fixed goals are set permanently into the ground. Portable goals stand on their own frame, so they can be moved or stored after practice, and one field can be set up for 4v4, 7v7 or 9v9 as needed.
When you buy a goal, check that the listed size is the opening: the Laws measure inside the posts and up to the bottom of the crossbar. Then match it to the age group table above.
Anchor every portable goal. A goal that isn't staked or weighted can tip over and cause serious injuries. Secure it as the manufacturer instructs, and never let anyone climb on or hang from the crossbar or net.

How big is a regulation soccer goal?
A regulation soccer goal is 8 yards (24 feet) wide and 8 feet tall, or 7.32 by 2.44 meters. The width is measured between the inside edges of the posts and the height from the ground to the bottom of the crossbar. This size, set by IFAB Law 1, is used for all 11v11 soccer, including youth games from U13.
How tall is a soccer goal for kids?
Under US Soccer's small-sided standards, goals for U6–U8 (4v4) are at most 4 feet tall. U9–U10 (7v7) goals are 6.5 feet tall, and U11–U12 (9v9) goals are 6.5 feet tall recommended, up to 7 feet. Players move to full 8-foot goals at U13. Your league may use smaller goals.
What size soccer goal is used for U10?
U9 and U10 play 7v7. US Soccer recommends a 6.5 × 12 ft goal and allows up to 6.5 × 18.5 ft (about 1.98 × 3.66 m recommended, 1.98 × 5.64 m maximum). AYSO uses the same sizes for its U9 and U10 divisions.
What size goal is used for 9v9 soccer?
For 9v9 (U11–U12), US Soccer recommends a 6.5 × 18.5 ft goal, with 7 × 21 ft as the maximum. Because 6.5 × 18.5 ft is also the largest 7v7 goal, many clubs use one set of goals for U9 through U12.
What size goal do U6, U7 and U8 use?
U6–U8 play 4v4 without goalkeepers. US Soccer's standards set a maximum goal of 4 feet tall by 6 feet wide (about 1.22 × 1.83 m). Smaller pop-up goals are fine, and some programs play even smaller games at U6, so check your league.
What is the size of a soccer goal in meters?
A full-size goal is 7.32 m wide and 2.44 m tall. In meters, youth goals are about 1.22 × 1.83 m (4 × 6 ft), 1.98 × 3.66 m (6.5 × 12 ft), 1.98 × 5.64 m (6.5 × 18.5 ft) and 2.13 × 6.40 m (7 × 21 ft), shown as height × width.
Is a soccer goal measured inside or outside the posts?
Inside. IFAB Law 1 measures the 7.32 m (8 yd) width between the inside edges of the posts and the 2.44 m (8 ft) height from the ground to the lower edge of the crossbar. Posts and crossbar can be up to 12 cm thick, so the outside of the frame is a little larger.
Are men's and women's soccer goals the same size?
Yes. The Laws of the Game set one goal size for 11v11 soccer: 8 yards wide and 8 feet tall. There is no separate size for women's soccer. Smaller goals are used only in youth small-sided formats such as 4v4, 7v7 and 9v9.
