A soccer substitution chart shows who plays in each sub window and where. Each row is a player and each column is a window. Pick the chart for your format and roster size, write your players' names next to the letters, and follow it across the game so everyone gets equal playing time.

How to read a substitution chart
- Rows are players (A, B, C…). Write a name next to each letter in the key under the chart.
- Columns are sub windows. The time at the top is when that window starts in the half or quarter.
- Colored boxes show the position: GK goalkeeper, LB/CB/RB backs, LM/CM/RM midfield, ST striker, LW/RW wings. A dash means that player is on the bench.
- The last column shows each player's total minutes and share of the game.
Put your strongest keeper candidates on the letters that play GK, and spread experienced players across the letters so every lineup is balanced.
4v4 substitution chart (U6–U8)
4v4 has no goalkeepers and is usually played in four 10-minute quarters (more on quarters vs halves). US Soccer's small-sided standards allow unlimited substitutions at any time, so you can rotate in the middle of quarters too. This chart uses 6 players and a change every 5 minutes:

7v7 substitution chart (U9–U10)
Two 25-minute halves, six field players plus a keeper. US Soccer recommends rosters of no more than 12 players (see how many players are on a soccer team). With 10 players and a sub every 5 minutes, everyone plays exactly 35 minutes:

11v11 substitution chart (U13 and older)
Bigger rosters and longer halves. This chart uses 16 players, two 35-minute halves and a sub every 7 minutes. With these numbers the split can't be perfect, so a few players get one extra window. Rotate who gets it from game to game. Picking a shape? See 11v11 soccer formations.

Tips for using a chart on the sideline
- Give the chart to a parent helper. They watch the clock and call the next change, so you can coach.
- Sub at stoppages near the planned time: throw-ins, goal kicks or after a goal.
- Rotate who starts. The players who start one game sit first in the next.
- Have a plan B. If a player is missing, use the substitution planner to rebuild the chart in seconds, or start Game Day mode to adjust live.
Want exact minutes for a different roster? Try the playing time calculator, or read how to sub in youth soccer.

Open the plannerFrequently asked questions
How do you make a soccer substitution chart?
List your players as rows and your sub windows as columns, then fill each window so the same number play every time and everyone gets an equal share. The generator on this page does it for any roster size and prints a ready chart.
How do I use a youth soccer substitution chart during a game?
Write each player's name next to a letter, then follow the columns: at each window, the players with a colored box are on the field in that position and those with a dash are on the bench.
How many players should be on a 7v7 roster?
US Soccer's small-sided standards recommend no more than 12 players for 7v7 (U9 and U10) and no more than 16 for 9v9 (U11 and U12).
Can I print a blank substitution chart?
Yes. Scroll to the blank templates and print the empty chart (up to 16 players and 10 windows) and the bench card, then fill them in by hand.
How often should I sub in 4v4?
4v4 allows unlimited substitutions at any time, so many coaches change every 4 to 5 minutes as well as at each quarter break. That keeps every child active and the rotation fair.
What if my numbers don't divide evenly?
A few players will get one extra window. The chart shows the range of minutes, and the planner can rotate who gets the extra time across the season.
